Costa Rica's waters literally teen with big game: dorado averaging 40 lb, yellowfin tuna that push the 300lb mark and one of the largest concentrations of big Pacific sailfish found anywhere. In fact, Costa Rica boasts one of the healthiest billfish fisheries in the world, with 20-fish days being a common occurrence. Unusually calm waters and short rides to the fishing grounds cement the country’s place at the top of the big game fishing destinations.
Those in search of an unforgettable sport fishing experience need to look no further than Los Sueños Marina, home to an extensive charter fleet certified by the Costa Rican Ministry of Tourism. It is not just the offshore fishing that is good in this area, the inshore fishing offers a great opportunity for 50lb+ roosterfish and 40lb+ dorado. You can try your hand at trying to catch these on a fly rod as well as regular spinning rods.
This area is one of the most consistent fishing grounds year round and therefore attracts some of the world’s most passionate anglers.

The Costa Rica fishing season is year round with the peaks for billfish (sailfish, and black, blue, and striped marlin) being during the tropical Gold Season, December through June. However, marlin can be found throughout the Green Season at the nearby sea mounts, with double digit marlin releases a common occurrence. The last few months have seen behemoths of around 750 lbs or more as well.
Los Sueños Resort and Marina has been running tournaments since 2004 and since 2014 has been hosting the ultimate billfishing competition, the Los Sueños Signature Triple Crown. Comprised of three legs fished out of the Los Sueños Marina every January, February, and March, the Triple Crown brings together over 50 of the world’s toughest offshore competitors. Only the best of the best participate and whomever is crowned Series Champion is not only honored on the Wall of Champions at the Hook Up, but takes home bragging rights for an entire year.
